Sunshine till Friday – Weather unsettles over the weekend

Very low temperatures and heavy frost in the north - Two barometric lows bring rain and snow from 18 January, even at low altitudes

Temperatures will remain very low in the country today, with frost – heavy in places in the north – in the morning and evening hours, while a new deterioration of the weather is expected from the weekend, according to the latest forecasts of meteorologists.

In a post, meteorologist Thodoros Kolydas noted that although the next few days will generally resemble Alcyonides, they do not meet the necessary criteria to be classified as such, mainly due to low minimum temperatures.

As he points out, minimum temperatures, despite a gradual rise, will remain at levels that favor frost, especially in northern Greece. Over the weekend, in fact, temperatures will drop again, but without reaching extreme lows.

Clear weather until Friday, change from Saturday

In an update, forecaster Sakis Arnaoutoglou said that the weather will remain generally clear in most parts of the country until Friday.

However, according to the latest forecasts, a change in the weather is expected from Saturday, initially from the west and east. The phenomena in these areas will persist until the evening, while from Sunday, the winter scenery will return more intensely.

Frost is expected today and tomorrow in several areas of the country, although maximum temperatures will rise. On Saturday, however, temperatures in the north will drop again.

According to Sakis Arnaoutoglou, two barometric lows are expected between January 18 and 22, which will bring several showers and snowfall. Snow will appear even in areas with low altitude, mainly in central and northern Greece.

The next few days, therefore, will be characterized by variations, with frost persisting in places and winter returning in force from the second half of the month.

Severe frost on Tuesday morning, 13/01 – Temperature approached -17 °C at Fort Nefrokopi

Heavy frost occurred in the morning hours of Tuesday, 13/01, in places on the mainland and especially in the northern parts of the country. The lowest minimum temperature was recorded in Ochro Nefrokopi with -16.8 °C. According to the network of automatic weather stations of the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr, the eight lowest minimum temperatures during the morning hours of Tuesday, 13/01, are presented in the table below.

Today’s weather

Sunshine is expected across the country. A few clouds will develop in Thrace, in the Aegean and in the continental highlands. At night and early in the morning on the mainland, frost will occur. Both in the Aegean and in the Ionian Sea, winds will blow from the northwest with intensities not exceeding 4 Beaufort.

In the prefecture of Attica and the city of Athens, we expect sunshine. In the evening hours, the visibility will be limited, and fog may form. Winds will be westerly with intensities of 2-3 Beaufort. The temperature will range from 5 to 14 degrees, but in the north, the minimum will be 2-3 degrees lower.

In Thessaloniki, we expect sunshine. At night and early in the morning, visibility will be limited, while in the evening, fog may form. Winds will be northwest with intensities of 2-3 Beaufort. Temperatures will range from 2 to 11 degrees, but peripheral to the city, the minimums will be 3-4 degrees lower.

The weather on Thursday, January 15

Generally clear weather. From the evening, thin clouds in the west and north. Visibility will be locally limited in the morning and evening hours, with fog mainly in the west.

Winds will blow in the north southwest at 2 to 4 Beaufort and in the south west at 3 to 5 Beaufort.

The temperature will rise slightly. It will reach 12 to 14 degrees Celsius in the northern mainland and 15 to 17 degrees Celsius in the rest of the regions, and 17 to 18 degrees Celsius locally in Crete and the Dodecanese. In the early morning in the northwestern continental areas, there will be frost in places.

In the morning and in the afternoon, in the south of the island, there will be a slight precipitation in the south-eastern part of the island.

The weather on Friday, January 16

Thin clouds, which will be sporadically more dense in the west and northeast. Visibility will be locally limited in the morning and evening hours. Winds in the west will blow from southerly directions 2 to 4 Beaufort and in the east from northerly directions 3 to 5 Beaufort.

Clouds in places and intermittently increasing with local rain, mainly in the Ionian Sea and the eastern islands.

A few clouds will be scattered and occasionally increase in the mainland and the Ionian Sea. Local showers will occur in the eastern mainland, the Cyclades, and Crete In the south and south-east of Crete. Winds will blow in the west, east southeast 5 to 6, and in the east northeast 5 to 7, and possibly in the Aegean Sea locally 8 Beaufort. The temperature will drop further in the eastern part of the country.
