Greece’s representative to the IMF, Thanos Katsambas, this week announced his resignation, three days after Greek FinMin Yanis Varoufakis paid a lightning visit to Washington D.C. to meet with Christine Lagarde.
His resignation will come into effect on June 1.
Katsambas assumed the post in January 2012 during the Loukas Papademos government.
Finance ministry officials said Katsambas’ resignation was a personal decision and was not requested by the radical leftist Greek government.
Varoufakis’ visit to D.C. raised eyebrows, as it came on Catholic Easter Sunday, with a casually dressed Lagarde arriving at the organization’s headquarters for the previously unscheduled meeting.
