A team of heavily armed militants launched an attack on Pakistan’s largest civilian airport on Sunday. The death toll reaches 28 including the ten attackers.
The spokesman of the Pakistan army said that the heavily armed terrorists were dressed in airport security personnel uniforms carrying missiles and rocket launchers, and according to estimates of the authorities, were wearing explosive vests since at least two of them blew themselves up when they had to confront the soldiers.
The identities of the other victims are not known yet, although it was initially said that among the dead are at least five employees of the international airport.
However, 11 corpses were transferred to the largest hospital of Karachi, among them are men of the security forces and two civilians.
The attack at the airport in Karachi, a city of 18 million people which is the main commercial centre of Pakistan, was launched while the government attempts to end a chronic conflict with the extreme radical Islamist groups.
No one has claimed directly the responsibility for this bloody attack, but the Pakistan Taliban, allies of the Taliban of Afghanistan who are fighting to overthrow the government and impose the hard Islamic law, was responsible for attacks of this kind in the past. The attack has caused fears of renewed violence in Pakistan.
