France, Germany and Britain ready for “defensive actions” to destroy Tehran’s military capabilities
The leaders of France, Germany, and Britain said today that they are ready to take “necessary and proportionate defensive actions” in response to Iran’s retaliation, aiming to “destroy at the source” Tehran’s military capabilities.
“We will take measures to defend our interests and those of our allies in the region,” the E3 warned in a joint statement, including the possible prevention of Iran from launching missiles and drones.
European leaders said they are shocked by the “indiscriminate and disproportionate” attacks hitting Middle Eastern countries that were not involved in the initial military operation.
The strikes, they said, “have targeted our close allies and threaten our military personnel and our citizens across the region.”
Berlin, Paris, and London added that they will discuss these defensive measures with the United States and their regional partners.

Araghchi: We were close to a deal, but Trump bombed the talks
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said U.S. President Donald Trump had effectively ordered the “bombing of the negotiating table” following U.S. and Israeli military operations in Iran.
The attacks on Iran took place just one day after the latest round of indirect nuclear talks between Iran and the United States.
“The deal was within reach. We left Geneva with the understanding that we would finalize the agreement the next time we met. Those who wanted to sabotage diplomacy achieved their goal,” Araghchi wrote in a post on X.
He added that it was Trump who “once again ultimately ordered the bombing of the negotiating table.”
After Friday’s talks in Geneva, Iran had struck an optimistic tone, while Trump said he was “not happy” with the progress.

Stability and peace are not built through mutual threats or weapons that sow destruction, pain, and death, says Pope Leo
Addressing the gathered crowd in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV referred to the latest developments in the Middle East.
“I am following with deep concern what is happening in the Middle East and in Iran during these dramatic hours. Stability and peace are not built through mutual threats, nor through weapons that sow destruction, pain, and death, but only through rational, authentic, and responsible dialogue,” the pontiff said.
“Faced with the possibility of a tragedy of enormous proportions, I urgently appeal to the parties involved to assume the moral responsibility of stopping the spiral of violence before it turns into an irreversible abyss. Let diplomacy rediscover its role, and let the good of peoples be promoted—peoples who long for peaceful coexistence founded on justice. Let us continue to pray for peace,” the pope added.

Israel estimates Iran has around 2,500 ballistic missiles
The Israeli armed forces estimate that Iran currently possesses about 2,500 ballistic missiles, noting that Tehran has accelerated production again following the June 2025 war.
According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), before the June 2025 conflict Iran had sought to significantly ramp up production, aiming to increase its stockpile from roughly 3,000 to 8,000 missiles within two years.
During the June fighting, Iran launched more than 500 missiles at Israel. The IDF said it destroyed hundreds through strikes on targets inside Iran and prevented the production of an additional 1,500 missiles by hitting manufacturing infrastructure.
In recent months, Iran has worked intensively to restore production capacity, building dozens of ballistic missiles each month. The IDF says the production rate has been rising.
“The possession of missiles by a regime seeking the destruction of the State of Israel constitutes an existential threat,” the IDF said, adding it “will not allow the Iranian terrorist regime to rebuild its military capabilities and will continue to act to eliminate any emerging threat to Israeli citizens, anywhere and at any time.”

At the same time, he reassured leaders in the region that Iran does not seek war with them, but will continue to target American bases in countries across the Middle East.

How Iran’s Constitution provides for succession to the Supreme Leader
The selection of a successor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is explicitly предусмотрed by Iran’s Constitution and falls under the authority of the Assembly of Experts, the same body that elevated him to leadership in 1989.
According to the Constitution, the successor must be chosen by the Assembly of Experts—an 88-member body of clerics who are formally elected by the public every eight years. In practice, however, only clerics deemed fully loyal to the Islamic Republic are eligible, meaning most current members hold hardline positions similar to Khamenei’s.
The Constitution requires the Assembly to select a new Supreme Leader as soon as possible. However, convening all members promptly may prove difficult, as the country is under military attack by the United States and Israel. Security concerns and operational constraints could delay the process amid heightened tension and uncertainty.
In the interim, the Constitution stipulates that the duties of the Supreme Leader are assumed temporarily by a three-member council comprising the president, the head of the judiciary, and a cleric who is a member of the powerful Guardian Council.
Activating this mechanism is considered crucial to maintaining institutional continuity until a new Supreme Leader is chosen.

Israel Calls on Its Citizens to Remain Vigilant
The National Security Council of Israel called on Israelis abroad to show heightened vigilance amid the outbreak of war with Iran and to take precautionary measures.
“The escalation of tensions with Iran increases the likelihood that the Iranian regime will intensify its efforts to carry out terrorist attacks abroad against Israeli/Jewish targets, starting immediately,” it said.
“Furthermore, based on past experience, the intent to harm Israelis abroad may also increase among other terrorist elements, alongside local initiatives (including lone actors).”
In addition, it urges Israelis to avoid sharing real-time details of their travel on social media, to avoid events identified with Israel or Judaism that are not secure, to remain particularly alert to their surroundings when in areas identified with Israel or Judaism, to report any threat or attack to local security forces, and to avoid areas known for hostility toward Israelis and Jews.

Sirens are sounding in central Israel, and Israelis receiving alerts are instructed to enter shelters.

The attack comes amid a period of high tension between Iran and the United States
The attack follows a period of particularly high tension between Iran and the US over Tehran’s nuclear program. This week, Trump warned that Iran is building weapons that could soon strike the United States. In his State of the Union address, he said Tehran is “working on missiles that will soon reach” America and pledged to prevent Iran—described as the “Number 1 sponsor of terrorism”—from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
Trump has also left open the possibility of regime change. He recently said that the removal of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei “would be the best thing that could happen.” However, US intelligence assessments have not concluded that Iran is already capable of building a weapon able to strike US territory.
The US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) estimated last year that Iran may need until 2035 to develop a “militarily viable” intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), meaning a missile that travels thousands of kilometers and, for a period, moves through space before its payload heads toward the target.

US allies in the Gulf, many of whom host American military bases and could be vulnerable to retaliatory strikes from Iran, had warned against military action and tried to find a diplomatic solution, but failed. The new outbreak of war in the region could have significant economic impacts. Iran lies along the Strait of Hormuz, a major sea route through which about one-fifth of global oil supplies pass, and is very close to Saudi Arabia’s major oil fields and the international commercial hub of Dubai.

Wall Street Journal and New York Times speak of a joint US–Israel operation
The Wall Street Journal and the New York Times confirm that the strikes against Iran are indeed a joint operation by Israel and the United States and not a unilateral strike by Tel Aviv. This is the first significant difference from the most recent episode last summer and the start of the 12-day war, when the initial strikes were an Israeli move to neutralize air defenses before US B-2 bombers struck Tehran’s nuclear facilities. Another important difference is that today targets have been hit—at least based on available information—that are not considered purely military.
28/02/2026 08:56
Is it a joint US–Israel operation?
An Israeli security source says that the ongoing attack in Iran is a joint operation of the United States and Israel, according to Israel’s Channel 12. So far, no missile attacks against Israel have been reported, and Israelis are being called to remain close to shelters, but not to enter them.
