U.S. President Donald Trump said that it may take about one week to reach an agreement between Washington and Tehran regarding a memorandum of understanding that would lead to a permanent end to the war between the two countries.
According to Fox News, Trump made the comment during a phone interview with the network, appearing cautiously optimistic about the course of the negotiations.
When asked about the possible timeline for reaching an agreement between Iran and the United States on the draft memorandum of understanding, the American president replied succinctly: “One week.”
“Cautiously optimistic”
The U.S. television network noted that Trump sounded “cautiously optimistic” during the call.
Timelines vary
It is also noted that the American president has, at times, given different timelines regarding negotiations with Iran in his frequent phone statements to journalists.
Tehran’s response expected within 48 hours
Earlier today, Axios reported that the U.S. side expects an official response from Tehran on the memorandum of understanding within the next 48 hours.
However, it remains unclear whether Trump’s reference to a one-week timeframe means that, even after the anticipated Iranian response, additional days of negotiations will be required to finalize the agreement.
