An international conference on prehistory, titled “Athens and Attica in Prehistory”, is to take place in Athens from May 27-31. Events are split among venues such as Athens University, the American School of Classical Studies and the Cycladic Art Museum.
The conference includes a number of presentations on Athenian prehistory where knowledge remains scant despite a number of important finds in recent years. The presentations are expected to bring together old and new excavation data and place these in a wider archeological context.
The following issues will be discussed:
- The geology and geomorphology of Attica
- Humans and their physical environment from the Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age
- Relative and absolute chronology
- Land use and settlement patterns
- Funerary architecture and practices
- Political economy and social organization
- Evidence of cult activities
- Metallurgy and its impact on Attic economy
- Contacts with other areas in the Aegean and beyond
- The place of Attica in the Mycenaean world
- Evidence of disruption or/and continuity at the end of the Bronze Age.
The conference is in English and Greek and is being held under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture. For the full program, CLICK HERE.
Speeches will be live streamed at www.ascsa.edu.gr/index.php/about/livestream.
