An alarm was raised in the early hours of Saturday in Mikrolimano, when officers from the Extortion Squad attempted to check a man believed to be a known underworld figure, an Albanian going around with the nickname “”Titi“. According to initial reports, the man pulled out a gun and tried to shoot at the officers, who immediately responded by wounding him.
The incident occurred outside a food and beverage establishment in Mikrolimano during an inspection by officers from the Extortion Squad.
According to reports, the group of eight officers approached the man to carry out the check, but he reacted by drawing a firearm. The same reports state that he attempted to fire at the officers, with one of them managing to use his service weapon first.
The man was injured and subdued at the scene, while authorities quickly launched a major operation in the area.
Strong police forces arrived at the scene and sealed off the area, while a unit from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Department (TEEM) was also called in after a bag containing grenades was found next to where the injured man had been sitting.
At the same time, according to the information released so far, officers found two pistols and a revolver with an extended 32-round magazine on him, as well as the bag containing grenades.
The spokesperson for the Hellenic Police, Police Captain Konstantia Dimoglidou, speaking to SKAI TV, confirmed that the man pointed a gun during the check, prompting officers to react immediately and take cover before the shooting.
The injured man was transferred by EKAB ambulance to Attikon Hospital, where he is being treated under guard. According to reports, he was conscious when transported, though his exact condition has not yet been disclosed.
Authorities are examining the man’s identity and criminal background, while the preliminary investigation into the case is ongoing.
