A series of initiatives to support professional fishermen was announced on Thursday by the Minister of Rural Development and Food, Margaritis Schinas, including measures targeting the silver-cheeked toadfish (lagokefalos).
Regarding the silver-cheeked toadfish, the ministry is launching a pilot program with compensation for catching the species in Crete and the South Aegean, funded through European resources.
The maximum net payment for catching silver-cheeked toadfish amounts to €5.33 per kilogram. This is up to 52% higher compared to Cyprus.
Among other measures is a draft law providing a subsidy for fishing fuel for the months of April, May, and June.
The subsidy amounts to €0.16 per liter for April and May, and €0.12 per liter for July.
