Thunderstorms and locally intense showers will continue across mainland Greece today, while temperatures remain high, according to protothema.gr meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafyllias. However, the arrival of strong northerly winds over the weekend is expected to change the weather pattern, reducing atmospheric instability and bringing a gradual fall in temperatures.

More specifically, today, Thursday, 2 July 2026, showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop across mainland Greece from midday onwards, particularly in Macedonia, Thrace and Thessaly, mainly over mountainous areas. The weather may be accompanied locally by strong winds and intense lightning activity.

Maximum temperatures are expected to reach 38°C in central and northern Greece, 33°C in the eastern Aegean, and 30–31°C across the Cyclades, the Ionian Islands and the Dodecanese.

Winds will blow from northwesterly directions. In the Ionian Sea they will reach up to Force 4 on the Beaufort scale, while in the south-eastern Aegean they may locally strengthen to Force 6.

In Attica, periods of cloud are expected, with a slight chance of a brief shower after midday in northern and mountainous areas. Winds will be light to moderate, while temperatures will range between 22°C and 35°C.

In Thessaloniki, a brief shower or thunderstorm is forecast from midday onwards. Winds over the Thermaic Gulf will remain light, while temperatures are expected to reach 34°C.

On Friday and Saturday, unsettled weather will persist during the warmest hours of the day across mainland Greece, while temperatures will begin to ease gradually.

At the same time, northerly winds will strengthen progressively from Saturday. By Sunday, showers and thunderstorms are expected to become much more limited and will come to an end across most parts of the country.
