Hymen rupture: A point of anxiety for young women

Myths and truths

Newsroom June 17 05:58

Beyond human anatomy 101, but a ruptured hymen is often a very traumatic experience for females inaugurating their sexual life.

According to the textbooks, the virginal hymen is a membrane that contains nerves and blood vessels located in the entrance of a female’s vagina. Read on, and you’ll see that the thickness varies from woman to woman, but usually between 1-2 mm thick, and in rare cases even thicker.

The strength of the hymen also varies with separate factors depending on elasticity and fleshly-fibrous resistance. Every young woman, upon her decision to become sexually active, may experience anxiousness about the breaking of the hymen.

The rupture is usually accomplished with the first sexual intercourse. Since blood vessels are broken, this often causes a slight bleeding, combined with vaginal fluids, a pink exudate is discharged. In rare cases, the bleeding may be more severe.

The rupture may be perfect or imperfect. This depends on the size of the penis (or object), but also the force applied during intercourse.

Rupture of the hymen can also be done through masturbation, foreign bodies inserted into the vagina, or even intense sports activities (such as cycling, dancing, horse riding etc), injuries, or even the use of tampons.

After the rupture there can be pain in the area even when walking. The wound heals within three to 15 days, while the surface cannot even be seen after two week.
