The heatwave begins with temperatures reaching 43°C – When the mercury will drop by up to 10 degrees

Tuesday is expected to be the most difficult day, while a noticeable easing begins from Thursday

The heatwave will peak over the next 48 hours, with temperatures locally reaching as high as 42 to 43 degrees, according to protothema meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafyllias.

More specifically, today, Monday 20 July 2026, temperatures are expected to reach 42 degrees late in the afternoon in Aetolia-Acarnania, 41 degrees in Thessaly, and 40 degrees in Central Macedonia and the Peloponnese.

Winds will blow from northerly and northwesterly directions. They will be light in the Ionian Sea, while in the central and southeastern Aegean Sea they will locally reach 6 Beaufort.

In Attica, sunny weather is forecast. Winds will be light and temperatures will range from 24 to 39 degrees.

In Thessaloniki, only a little cloud cover is expected. Winds in the Thermaic Gulf will be light, while temperatures will reach 37 degrees.

Tuesday will be the most difficult day of the heatwave. The maximum temperature will locally reach 43 degrees in Thessaly and Aetolia-Acarnania, 42 degrees in the Peloponnese and Phthiotis, and 40 degrees in Central Macedonia, Attica, Crete, and the Dodecanese. At the same time, brief showers are expected during the afternoon hours, mainly in mountainous areas.

On Wednesday, the heatwave will begin to recede in western and northern Greece, while instability will persist in the north. However, in Thessaly, the Attica-Boeotia region, eastern Peloponnese, Crete, and the Dodecanese, temperatures will continue to locally reach 38 to 40 degrees.

On Thursday, the heatwave will be in retreat, with a significant drop in temperature of 8 to 10 degrees.

On Friday and, to a lesser extent, Saturday, rain and thunderstorms are expected in much of the country, along with a further drop in temperature and a temporary strengthening of the northerly winds to 7 to 8 Beaufort.

On Sunday, the weather will improve.
