Shortly after the announcement of the Referendum by PM Tsipras, early on Saturday morning, hundreds of people rushed to ATMs to withdraw cash, fearing that banks will remain closed on Monday and that the country will run out of cash.
Images that haven’t been seen in Greece since the war — ATMs, excluded, of course — showed crowds at super markets and lines of cars waiting to fill up . One elderly woman was rushed by an ambulance to a hospital after she passed out outside an ATM in central Athens.
Lines of people waited outside ATMs across the country, at least outside machines that still spit out cash.
Meanwhile, the president of the Greek Banks Union, Louka Katseli, stated: “I can assure you that the ATMs are being resupplied by the Bank of Greece. Whenever there’s a problem due to a rise in outflow, it is addressed as soon as possible”.
Katseli, the president of National Bank of Greece, was a former PASOK minister who months before the snap election mostly joined SYRIZA’s positions.
In a related development, Alpha Bank announced that web banking transfers were cancelled until Sunday.
