Fire-weather conditions will be quite unfavourable today due to high temperatures and gale-force, with gusts locally exceeding 100 km/h.
Indeed, the entire week will be characterised by strong winds, particularly on the eve of and on 15 August. At the same time, according to protothema.gr meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafyllias, no significant rainfall is expected, while the highest temperatures will be recorded mainly in western and northern Greece.
For today, Monday 10 August, a very high fire risk (Category 4) is forecast in Attica and Kythera, much of the Peloponnese, Achaea, Central Greece and Evia, as well as on islands in the northern and southern Aegean and Crete.
Winds will blow from northerly to north-westerly directions. They will be light in the Ionian Sea, while in the Aegean they will locally reach 8 Beaufort, with gusts exceeding 100 km/h.
Temperatures will reach 38-39°C in the western mainland, 37°C in Crete, the Dodecanese and Central Macedonia, and 34°C on the Ionian islands.
In Attica, sunny conditions are forecast, with temperatures ranging from 23°C to 35°C. Northerly winds in the east will locally reach 7 Beaufort.
In Thessaloniki, partly cloudy conditions are expected, with a chance of brief showers after midday. Winds in the Thermaic Gulf will be light and temperatures will reach 34°C.
The weather over the coming days
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the meltemi winds will temporarily weaken, while the highest temperatures will be recorded in western Greece, with the mercury locally reaching 39°C.
From Thursday through to Sunday, the main features of the weather will be a gradual drop in temperatures across the country and a renewed strengthening of the winds. No rainfall is expected.
More specifically, on the eve of and on 15 August, Friday and Saturday, meltemi winds in the east will be gale-force, locally reaching as high as 9 Beaufort. Temperatures will not exceed 35°C in the west, while in the east and the Aegean, strong northerly winds will keep conditions cooler.
