A label indicating whether an artist has been created using artificial intelligence will begin appearing on Spotify on certain profiles from mid-September.

The streaming service says the “AI Persona” label will inform listeners if “an artist’s identity may have been created by artificial intelligence and does not represent a real person.”

The changes will give listeners “greater transparency” about what they are listening to, Spotify adds.

The label will appear in the banner and “About” section of artists’ profiles, as well as in a note when they appear in search results and on playlist tracks. Artists carrying the label will not appear in users’ personalized recommendations unless users already follow them.

The platform also says the label will relate to the artist’s “public identity” rather than “how the music was created,” acknowledging that artificial intelligence tools are now used in some cases in the creation of music by human artists.

The BBC notes that the platform’s decision comes after listeners made it clear to Spotify that they dislike seeing a profile that appears to belong to a human, only to discover that it is actually an artificial intelligence creation.

The British broadcaster adds that it had received a complaint from a frustrated listener who, after noticing that his playlists were becoming increasingly filled with tracks he suspected had been created using artificial intelligence, built a tool to block them.
