PPC’s fixed tariff cut shields Greek households, prime minister says

Kyriakos Mitsotakis says DEI's new Blue tariff, priced at 11.5 cents per kilowatt-hour, keeps household bills down despite global energy volatility, crediting the once near bankrupt state energy utility's complete financial turnaround since 2019

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has commented on the new conditions in the retail electricity market created by PPC, Greece’s Public Power Corporation, through its new Blue tariff, which offers a fixed rate of 11.5 cents per kilowatt-hour, in a post on social media.

“In an environment of international instability, we are managing to keep prices low. This is not by chance,” Mitsotakis said, recalling that while PPC was on the brink of bankruptcy in 2019, today it serves as a shield of protection for every Greek family.

Mitsotakis’s post in full

“I want to talk to you about an important announcement made yesterday that you may not be aware of. PPC has announced that its fixed tariff for next year is falling to 11.5 cents per kilowatt-hour, with a standing charge of just 3.5 cents.

And this comes at a time of rising energy prices internationally, which in another era would automatically have meant a more expensive bill for every Greek household. Yet we are managing to keep prices low. This is not by chance.

It could not happen without a financially strong public electricity company, capable of absorbing part of the cost itself rather than passing it on to the consumer. A public company that, I want to remind you, was on the brink of bankruptcy in 2019.

Today it is a shield of protection for every Greek family, because a strong PPC ultimately means something very simple: less pressure on electricity bills.”
