Giorgos Mazonakis’s final minutes: The plasmapheresis machine repeatedly sounded alarms while Gaka pressed restart

The Hellenic Police investigation is now reconstructing in detail how the machine operated on the critical day — blood exchange began at 2:37 p.m., the first interruption came at 3:22 p.m., and alarms were recorded through 3:45 p.m.

Police investigating the circumstances surrounding Giorgos Mazonakis’s death now have a detailed digital timeline of the plasmapheresis machine’s operation. The data shed light on the critical actions from the beginning of the preparation through the system’s successive warnings.

According to the Hellenic Police investigation and information from protothema.gr, the machine was activated at 2:14 p.m., although the blood-exchange procedure involving the patient had not yet begun at that time. It is noted that, according to evidence in the possession of the Hellenic Police—including the testimony of the taxi driver who transported the singer—Giorgos Mazonakis appears to have entered the medical office between 1:50 and 2:00 p.m.

Nine minutes after the machine was activated, the system recorded its first alarm. According to the investigators’ assessment of the data, this indication could have been associated either with a problem in the tubing, such as a kink in one of the tubes, or with a change in the patient’s blood pressure.

The actual start of the procedure—that is, the blood exchange—is recorded at 2:37 p.m. From that point onward begins the most critical part of the timeline.

This particular time is especially significant because it is now an objective digital record establishing when the treatment began, adding to the other evidence from cameras, photographs, witness statements and electronic records.

At 3:22 p.m., the first critical interruption is recorded. The machine stops carrying out the blood exchange.

This is the point on which the investigation is focusing particularly closely, because from then on the system begins recording a series of successive warnings. The authorities are examining exactly what had happened to the patient at that moment and what actions were taken inside the medical office.

By 3:45 p.m., according to the recovered data, the machine had recorded three more alarms. According to the assessment being made as part of the police investigation, these particular alarms are associated with an absence of cardiac pulses.

This finding is of exceptional significance to the investigation, as police are attempting to determine exactly when the singer’s condition seriously deteriorated and how the doctors present responded.

The most critical new piece of information concerns what appears to have happened at 3:45 p.m. According to information from protothema.gr, following the repeated alarms, the machine was given another command to start operating. However, the system stopped itself almost immediately.

This particular digital trace is being examined with particular attention, as the authorities want to establish exactly what the machine was detecting at that moment and why it effectively did not allow the procedure to continue.

The question now being raised is what condition Giorgos Mazonakis was in when the attempt was made to restart the machine and what indications the doctors already had available to them.

The timeline that must be reconciled with the call to EKAB

The new data are being added to the already known fact that the call to EKAB, Greece’s emergency medical service, was made at 4:11 p.m.

Thus, 49 minutes elapsed between the first interruption of the treatment at 3:22 p.m. and the call for emergency assistance, while during that interval the machine repeatedly recorded alarms and there was an unsuccessful attempt to restart it at 3:45 p.m.

The complete timeline is as follows:

2:14 p.m.: The machine is activated. At this stage, Giorgos Mazonakis has not yet been connected for the blood exchange.

2:23 p.m.: The first alarm is recorded. According to the assessment being made as part of the investigation, such an indication could point either to a problem with the tubing or to an issue involving the patient’s blood pressure.

2:37 p.m.: The actual blood-exchange procedure begins and the treatment enters its main phase.

3:22 p.m.: The first interruption of the treatment is recorded. From this point, the machine stops delivering blood.

3:22–3:45 p.m.: The system records a total of three new alarms, which, according to information from the investigation, are associated with an absence of cardiac pulses.
