The file on the Hellenic Shipyards at Scaramanga and the faulty submarines was sent to Parliament by appeals court prosecutors following the submission made by Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) deputy Zoe Konstantopoulou during the plenary session of December 18, 2013. The casefile was submitted together with a request to investigate the possible criminal liability on the part of current coalition government Vice-President and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos and former finance minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou can be investigated.
As far as the court documents are concerned the relevant deputy prosecutor Poppy Papandreou notes that the casefile was assembled “based on the transcripts of the December 18,2013, Plenary Session of parliament for the case of the submarines and Scaramangas shipyard.”
It is also noted that, “from the preliminary investigation which was conducted evidence emerged regarding the potential criminal responsibility of ministers – members of the government and specifically Mr. Venizelos and Mr. Papaconstantinou.
The court documents prompted an angry response from PASOK. The party released a statement maintaining that the prosecutor’s office didn’t have the competency to conduct the any sort of evaluation as the evidence they relied on came from the record of the meeting of the relevant committee of parliament.
On her part, Ms. Konstantopoulou slammed Mr. Venizelos and Mr. Papaconstantinou for efforts to slow down investigation efforts. According to a SYRIZA party announcement, justice found that there was evidence worth investigating with regard to possible criminal liability.”In the most blatant way, it was proved that (Prime Minister Antonis Samaras)-Venizelos, New Democracy-PASOK are partners not just in the destruction of the Greek people and the country but also in committing and covering up the most serious crimes against the state,” the announcement said.
The party noted that when SYRIZA had tabled its motion for a Parliamentary committee to investigate the submarines and shipyards case, “some people accused us of ‘serving vested interests’ and challenged us to …duels”.
“After voting against such an investigation by Parliament – once again acting as body guards for their criminally liable political partners and themselves, they urged us to ‘go to the prosecutor’. We did this. We placed all the evidence before the Corruption Prosecutor, as this transpired during the discussion in Parliament. And based on these facts, justice found that there was evidence that needed to be investigated relating to possible criminal liability on the part of Venizelos-Papaconstantinou. And they shut down Parliament!” SYRIZA’s announcement stressed.
