The fire in the broader area of ​​Mavros Kolymbos in Ierapetra, Crete, which started early Saturday morning, has taken on very large proportions. Damages has been reported to houses and warehouses.

The winds blowing early in the area are of very high intensity, reaching 8 Beaufort, so the flames that started from the area of ​​Kalyvitis, near Schinokapsala, quickly reached southward towards the settlement of Mavros Kolymbos.

On the order of the Municipality of Ierapetra, the settlement of Mavros Kolymbos was evacuated, while residents of the settlements of Mavros Kolymbos, Achlion, Agias Fotias, and Galini received instructions via message from 112 to head east towards the Koutsoura area.

A 74-year-old man who attempted to extinguish the fire approaching his house suffered burns, mainly on his face. He was picked up by an ambulance from the National Center for Emergency Care and transferred to the Venizelio Hospital.

The flames passed through several houses, burning several yards, while at least one residence has more serious damage, and some greenhouses have also been burned.
