Cycladic Snow: When sundrenched islands freeze (photos)

Here’s what happens to the Cycladic islands over winter

We’re not used to seeing Cycladic islands with their sugar-cubed houses covered under layers of snow. The extreme weather over recent days has left villages on some Cycladic islands isolated due to the snow, with problems on Andros, Naxos and Syros.

Power cuts on Tinos were caused by the bad weather with help being sent from Athens to help pave streets around eight communities that have been snowed in. These include Falatados, Steni, Tripopotamos, Kardiani, Ysternia, Panormos, Pyrgos and Komi.

The road network of Andros is covered under two meters of snow with nine communities isolated as a result of this, including Apikia, Vourkoti, Mesa Vouni, Exo Vouni, Kohylos, Pitrofos, Paleohora, Aprovato and Armi. Tyre chains are required to travel on the island’s regional roads.

Mountainous Naxos is also facing problems.
