Deposit outflows exceed 1 billion euros in just two days

The fact that in just two business days a staggering 1.5 billion euros have been withdrawn is especially alarming for Greek bankers

Wednesday was a difficult day for Greek banks liquidity, with approximately 500 million euros withdrawn by depositors in a single day.

Although this figure is not final, as there are payments and compensations which will only appear in accounts today, the amount is still exceptionally high.

The delayed appearance of certain capital movements in accounts is also the reason why the deposit outflows figure for Monday is significantly higher than the initial estimate, which was approximately 600 million euros. According to banking sources the amount is in reality closer to 900 million euros.

The fact that in just two business days a staggering 1.5 billion euros have been withdrawn from Greek banks is especially alarming for Greek bankers, who are running all possible scenarios ahead of the national elections to be held in the country on January 25, including a massive bank run.

Even more worrying is the ineffectiveness of the reassuring statements made by European officials in order to entertain the risk of Grexit, banking sources say.
The same sources indicate that the outflows typically escalate on holidays.
