Election battle is close, but polls show slight lead for SYRIZA

September 20 is just around the corner, and a huge number of voters remain undecided

The Greek elections on September 20 are anyone’s call in a volatile political landscape, say polls. The Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) still has a slight lead, however all polls agree that there will be no absolute majority in Greek Parliament following Sunday.

Proto Thema’s Alco poll gives SYRIZA a 0.7-point lead but a smaller share of the votes at 25.4%, followed by the conservative New Democracy with 24.7%. Fascist Golden Dawn ranks third with 6.4%, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) follows with 6.2%, socialist PASOK-DIMAR with 5.1%, Potami with 4%, Centrists Union with 3.9%, Popular Unity with 3.4% and lastly Independent Greeks with 2.6%, leaving them outside Parliament. Undecided voters are at 10.4%.

Kapa Research in Sunday’s newspaper of Vima placed SYRIZA ahead by just 0.5% with 26.7% of voter preference, followed by New Democracy with 26.2%. Another battle is that of third place with neo-Nazi Golden Dawn ranking third with 7%, socialist PASOK-DIMAR following with 6.1%, Communist Party of Greece (KKE) with 5.9%, centrist Potami (River) with 5%, Popular Unity with 4.2%, Centrists Union with 3.6% and Independent Greeks (ANEL) with 3.1%. A whopping 10.2% of voters are undecided.

Newspaper Real News conducted a poll by MRB in which SYRIZA is ahead with a 0.4-point lead at 25.9%, followed by New Democracy with 25.5%. Golden Dawn gets third place with 6.1%, KKE follows with 5.7%, PASOK-DIMAR with 5.3%, Potami with 4.9%, Centrists Union with 3.9%, Popular Unity with 3.2% and the Independent Greeks with 2.65% and not getting a seat in parliament. Undecided voters are place at 14.1%.

Sunday’s leftist newspaer Avgi tied SYRIZA and New Democracy with 31% each. PASOK-DIMAR come in third place with 8%, followed by Golden Dawn with 7%, KKE at 6.5%, Potami with 4.5%, Popular Unity with 4%, Centrists Union with 3%, and lastly Independent Greeks with 2%, leaving them outside Parliament.

RASS’s opinion poll in PARON shows SYRIZA squeezing ahead of ND with 27.4% against ND’s 27.1%, followed by Golden Dawn with 6.4%, KKE with 5.5%, PASOK-DIMAR with 4.8%, Potami with 3.8%, Centrists Union with 3.3%, Popular Unity with 3% and Independent Greeks with 2.3%. Undecided vote is 13.1 pct.

Polls published on Saturday also showed SYRIZA ahead by a very slight margin, ranging from 0.2-1% points ahead of New Democracy, with both parties seen getting between a quarter and third of the vote.
