Europol battles ISIS…on the Internet

Europol internet unit after ISIS account

The Islamic State (IS) might be living in the early medieval period, executing dissenters and the unfaithful left and right by beheadings, crucifixions and stoning, but it is well in the modern era when it comes to using means to recruit new followers through social media and the internet. For this reason Europol, Europe’s Law Enforcement Agency set up a unit to take on the extreme Islamist state’s methods of propaganda in an effort to contain their reach and effectiveness.  The small unit will comprise 10 to 20 officers from around Europe and aims at detecting IS-group linked social media accounts. According to Europol up to 5.000 EU citizens have already travelled to fight for IS in the territories it controls in Syria and Iraq.
