Greece decided to extend the fence in Evros

The fence will be extended initially by 80 kilometers and will eventually protect the full length of the river borders with Turkey

Newsroom August 23 08:31

The Greek government meeting was concluded, with the main topic being that of guarding the borders in Evros.

Turkey’s new strategy on the land borders was an alarm for the government, hence the KYSEA meeting was held at the Maximos Palace, under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister.

During the meeting, it was decided to extend the Evros fence gradually along the entire Evros river.

The expansion will also be done with national resources, if there is no European funding, which is not very possible.

The government has applied to the European Commission, but an approval is still pending.

At the same time, an overall overview of the situation at sea and on land was made and it was said that there is a tripling of incidents at sea, mainly on the route to Italy, such as the incident a few days ago in Kythira.

There was also a discussion about the recent Evros incident.

It was found that due to the fact that the maps were drawn up in 1926 and the morphology of the terrain in the area is variable through time, the August 15th episode on the small Evros islet was staged by Turkey.

“We have to stay alert”, said meeting participants, as scenarios were assessed, but it is unclear how the Turks will behave and how far they will go.

The meeting was held in the presence of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Defense, the Head of the National Security Agency, as well as other leading ministers.

At the meeting all the facts were put on the table, so that the incident of Evros will not keep on being repeated continuously in the coming weeks and months.
