Greece engulfed in fires – EC sends helicopters and planes

Firefighters from Romania and the Czech Republic are arriving on the fronts

Newsroom August 22 02:34

Greece is being engulfed in fires as the fronts span across Attica, Alexandoupolis, and Aspropyrgos, while the EU is sending aid in material and machinery, as well as human resources to assist the country.

EU Commission spokesman Balazs Ujvari when asked about the situation said that Greece activated the civil protection mechanism two days ago.

“We are deploying almost 1/3 of the aircraft we have in our rescue fleet. This means that we are sending seven planes and one helicopter to Greece, mainly in the northwest of the country. They are coming from Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Sweden,” said Ujvari, adding that more than 100 firefighters and about 20 vehicles from Romania and the Czech Republic are also assisting, while the Copernicus system is also being used.

“The EU remains at the disposal of the Greek authorities should there be a need for further assistance,” the Commission spokesman stressed.

According to the Greek Fire Brigade, fires broke out near business premises at Aspropyrgos, and 72 firefighters with 27 vehicles and two helicopters are operating to extinguish them.

At the same time, according to an update from the police, traffic regulations have been put in place in the area. Specifically, traffic was stopped on NATO Avenue from the junction Thriasiou to Zoodochou Pigi in both directions and in Agia Sophia and NATO Avenue to the mountain. A short while ago, exit 4 of Attiki Street was opened.

At the moment, Attiki Odos is closed from the entrance of Elefsina to the junction Perif. Aigaleo (5) in both directions.
