Greek farmers may get compensation for losses suffered as a result of the Russian embargo on imports from the European Union. A statement made by the Foreign Ministry late on Saturday said that the producers will have the government’s support.
Government Spokesperson Sofia Voultepsi said the government is heeding the farmers’ calls and told Mega TV on Monday that the producers are “absolutely right.” “Whatever happens, they will be compensated, either by national or European funds.”
Ms. Voultepsi accused opposition parties of adopting an “anti-European approach.” “You cannot base your foreign policy on peaches,” she said. “There is a big difference between compensating farmers and changing your alliances.”
The calls for compensation are part of a joint front with other EU member states that have jointly asked for the Council of Ministers of Rural Development in Brussels to convene. Prior to Russia’s imposition of sanctions, the Greek Finance Ministry had met and intervened with a call for EU mobilization in the protection of European products at the start of the crisis at Ukraine.
