Early Thursday morning, the Hellenic Navy frigate HS Hydra fired shots at two drones as part of its mission in EUNAV FOR ASPIDES operation (Operation Shields) in the Gulf of Aden. According to reports the incident occurred while the navy frigate was helping to protect a merchant vessel in the maritime route. The Greek frigate reportedly shot at two Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), in accordance with the Rules of Engagement, where one drone was shot down, and the other was removed. This incident comes 1.5 months following its first engagement in a same operation.

According to the latest official update on Operation Shields, the European mission has destroyed a total of 10 unmanned aircraft and has intercepted four missiles launched by the Houthis in the Red Sea since mid-February, while 79 merchant ships were safely assisted to cross the maritime route. Defense Minister Nikos Dendias went to to state that four frigates from Greece, Germany, France, and Italy are participating in patrolling a vast area that stretches from the southern Red Sea to the northwestern Indian Ocean.
