Kavala mayor apologizes to Greek Jews over monument

The retraction…

Kavala’s Mayor Dimitra Tsanaka apologized to the Greek Jewish community for offending them following criticism concerning her decision to block the unveiling of a Holocaust memorial to the city’s 1,484 Jews killed by Nazi troops because it featured the Star of David.

Tsanaka said that “errors and omissions were made by the administration” and said that her reaction was solely based on efforts to protect the monument from possible reactions and vandalism. Furthermore, she said \she respects religious symbols and honors the memory of fellow citizens who perished at the hands of the Nazis.

She said she was convinced that misunderstandings had been resolved with the Jewish community in the country. The unveiling of the monument will take place soon.
