Mitsotakis: Discussion on the Monastery of Chora becoming a mosque – A pointless move, the issue will be raised with Erdogan

Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited Katerina Sakellaropoulou at the Presidential Mansion for the usual monthly briefing, during which he informed her about the upcoming trip to Turkey and the European elections. Mr. Mitsotakis expressed his dissatisfaction in regards to the Monastery of Chora being turned into a mosque, emphasising that the issue will be raised with the Turkish president during his visit in Ankara next Monday. PM Mitsotakis explained to the President of the Hellenic Republic that this move was pointless, adding that such tactics offend the rich history of Constantinople which is renowned as being the crossroad of civilization. Moreover, Mr. Mitsotakis underscored that communication channels with Turkey remains open even when being challenged.

The PM highlighted the intense polarization from other parties before the European elections, stressing the importance of voting to strengthen the country’s presence warning against toxic political climates. President Sakellaropoulou agreed, and went further to emphasise the need for good communication with Turkey expressing concern about the Monastery of Chora. Mrs. Sakellaropoulou stressed the necessity of wide participation in the elections due to significant challenges facing Europe.
