President of Greece: The obsession with profit is killing nature

Mr Papoulias stressed that at an international level, crimes are being committed against future generations

“Greed and the obsession with profit are killing nature, causing climate change and massive ecological damage,” said the President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias on the occasion of World Environment Day on Thursday.

Mr Papoulias stressed that at an international level, crimes are being committed against future generations and he added that “despite the increased awareness of a large part of society, despite the efforts of movements and non -governmental organizations, the forests are disappearing, the groundwater and the air we’re breathing is getting polluted, safe drinking water is dwindling, the glaciers are melting and rare fauna species are on the brink of extinction.”

The President of the Hellenic Republic concludes his message by saying that we should all remember that our unique natural heritage does not belong to us, that we have a moral obligation not to deliver to the next generation a country uglier than the one we received. The least we can do for the next generation, that has been wronged, is not to allow further environmental degradation.”
