Samothrace, Greece’s northernmost island is dominated by mount Saos, the highest mountain in the North Aegean Sea. The mountain’s tip, which is called Fengari (Moon), rises to 1.611 meters and towers above the islands beautiful pebbly beaches and the amazing archaeological finds.
According to Greek mythology, Poseidon sat on the top of this beautiful mountain to watch the Troy War. And he couldn’t have chosen a more wonderful spot, since it offers a majestic view of the hundreds of crystal watered streams that rush through the forests all the way to the sea, of the impressive waterfalls and of the famous stone basins, which are called Vathres.
These waterfalls and basins are the most famous attractions of the island, and include the Fonias (killer) stream and waterfall, Kakia Plaka and Gria Vathra.
An island with a long and mysterious history
There is evidence of human activity on this amazing island since the Neolithic times, which explains the numerous archaeological treasures found here. The Kavirian Mysteries, religious events of great importance which were being held to honor the Kaviri, a group of enigmatic chthonic deities, brought the island to prominence during antiquity.

– The Gattilusi Tower, located in the capital of the island that was built in 1430 in order to protect the island from pirate raids.
