YouTube “freed” from Turkish “imprisonment”

Turkish citizens should be able to access to popular video website within the day

Turkey’s regulatory authority removed YouTube from the list of officially banned websites, which means that Turkish internet users will be able to access it once more. This latest ban lift comes after the Turkish Supreme Court’s ruling that the block was in violation of human rights.

The popular video website will be accessible to users in Turkey within the day, according to Reuters.

The blocking of YouTube and Twitter was imposed after the publication of illegally intercepted conversations supposedly revealing corruption within Prime Minister Erdogan’s inner circle. The Twitter block was lifted in April, whereas the YouTube access ban was imposed on March 27th, in view of local elections. The intercepted talk took place between top government officials, the Turkish clandestine services and the army and it concerned the possibility of a Turkish military intervention in Syria. Erdogan condemned this interception as an act of treason. In the end, the Turkish PM emerged victorious from March 30th’s local elections.
