According to most of the opinion polls conducted recently, SYRIZA leads slightly over New Democracy, and the only thing they might fear a week before the elections is last-minute gaffes. This is the greatest danger, as members of the party say, that can halt the route of SYRIZA to a historic electoral victory of the left, even though the battle concerns the European Parliament.
SYRIZA had a few days to deal with its internal problems and the contradictory statements of its members. However, the unexpected intervention of Manolis Glezos, who put on the table the idea of “mandatory domestic borrowing for incomes over a threshold,” provoke great concerns in the leadership of SYRIZA.
The statement of Mr. Glezos arouse memories of the discussions that SYRIZA tries to put aside and concern a possible deadlock on the issue of financial need. This discussion include also what will happen to the deposits of Greek people and country’s place in eurozone, issues that SYRIZA does not want to stress during these elections. The statement, though, made by Mr Glezos gave the opportunity to Prime Minister Antonis Samaras to bring back these issues, putting SYRIZA in a rather difficult position.
The problem, however, for SYRIZA remains as it is not the first time that the controversial statements of its members complicate things. During past two or three weeks SYRIZA made great efforts not to discuss the euro and drachma issue.
Of course SYRIZA officially accuses its political opponents of distorting the facts and statements, but the annoyance and discomfort due to these statements are obvious. SYRIZA members were probably annoyed mainly because a top executive tried to respond to problems that a government of the left might deal with in the future, but have nothing to do with these elections.
