Mussolini’s villa on Rhodes among properties HRADF is selling

The house offers spectacular views of the Aegean Sea and was intended as a gift to the Italian dictator

Newsroom August 12 02:41

Another hidden architectural gem that is included in the list of properties HRADF is planning to sell is the famous Mussolini Villa on Rhodes.

Built on a mountain named for the Prophet Elijah on the Greek island of Rhodes and nestled the pines, the now decrepit villa and the vast area surrounding is an impressive reminder of the Italian rule over the Dodecanese.

The luxurious residence was built in 1936 by Cesare Maria De Vecchi, the Italian governor of the island at the time and one of Benito Mussolini’s most trusted aides. The house offers spectacular views of the Aegean Sea and was intended as a gift to the Italian dictator, who didn’t get a chance to enjoy it.

Despite the rotting wooden floorboards and the graffiti-ridden, dirty walls of the two-story building, the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF) hopes to restore the villa to its former glory and sell it through the privatization program for approximately 22.4 billion euros through 2022.

“There has been a significant shift in investor sentiment on real estate assets in the past 12 months, both globally and locally. The only criterion now is the highest bid per asset,” said Andreas Taprantzis, HRADF’s CEO in an interview.
