The flow of refugees and migrants in Greek islands of the northern Aegean Sea is steadily rising, with 269 new one landing on the islands of Lesvos (84), Chios (103) and Samos (82) over the weekend. According to data by the police of the northern Aegean island region, asylum applicants on Lesvos are 5,159, 3,596 on Chios and 1,095 on Samos, with the total number trapped on the three islands amounting to 9,850. Especially on the island of Lesvos, the situation is simmering, as migrants, mainly from Pakistan and north African countries, often protesting on the streets of the island. Over 300 have already abandoned the organised hotspots and are squatting in public roads. Meanwhile, petty crime like mugging and shoplifting has increased on the islands as a result of the the migrants’ desperation and total poverty.
