According to some recent evidence, the traffickers may have changed their points of entrance to Europe. It seems that now they are using the Greek-Bulgarian borders in Thrace to send these people from Greece to Bulgaria and then to Europe.
The evidence that the traffickers and the illegal immigrants or refugees leave behind are being found especially in the forest covered areas dividing Greece and Bulgaria. Cloths, shoes, plastic water bottles etc.
The information and the photographs came from Chara Nikopoulou, the manager of the local school “Arc of Domna Vizvizi” that she founded and which is located next to the Greek-Bulgarian borders. In a post on her facebook page, she writes that these items are found all the time close to her school by the borderline. She further argues that the traffickers are bringing people from Bulgaria to Greece.
However, there is no evidence that would indicate that they bring these people to Greece, as it wouldn’t make much sense, since the immigrants and the refugees want to go to Central and Northern Europe. It would also be difficult to enter Bulgaria from Turkey, as Sofia has already built a wire-wall along its borders with Turkey.
It is still not clear to what extend all this has been evaluated by the Greek and European authorities, such as the FRONTEX.
