All Greek students to be provided masks, Greek Interior Minister says

He stressed that 9,000 new cleaning staff has been hired

Newsroom August 21 11:16

As Greek students prepare to return to schools on September 7, the Minister of Interior Takis Theodorikakos announced on Friday on SKAI TV that all pupils would be provided with masks through the local and regional government amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

As he explained, the prime minister gave an instruction and order to the Ministry of Interior to do everything in its power.

“We are ready and awaiting the instructions of the infectious disease experts for the specifications after yesterday’s suggestion for the use of a mask by all students,” the minister stressed, adding that details will be available in the coming hours or days.

He also stressed that the state had taken on 9,500 cleaning staff to keep the country’s school buildings clean. “There will be no problem with the hygiene and safety of our children in the public education system,” the interior minister reassured.

Mr. Theodorikakos announced that the measure of telework or back office can be extended later into September, for civil servants belonging to the increased risk groups. The measure is scheduled to expire in 10 days.

Meanwhile, clarifications regarding the use of the mask by the students as soon as the schools open, were offered this morning by Minister of Education Niki Kerameos, speaking to Open TV.

The minister stressed that “the use of the mask will be mandatory indoors”, adding that outdoors its use will be mandatory only if there is overcrowding. So, in the gym, during breaks, etc., children of any age will not need to wear a mask.
