US establishes “Disinformation Governance Board” – Elon Musk posts “discomforting” on Twitter

Many conservative commentators have likened the new body to the "Ministry of Truth" in Nazi Germany

Newsroom April 29 05:01

Tesla CEO Elon Musk reacted negatively on Twitter, in response to the US government’s establishment of a “Disinformation Governance Board” to combat online disinformation just days after Musk’s deal to buy Twitter.

The richest man in the world tweeted “Discomforting,” in response to a tweet from conservative commentator Steven Crowder comparing the newly established board to Nazi Germany.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas informed the US Congress on Wednesday that a “Disinformation Governance Board” had recently been created, days after Musk purchased Twitter, to combat online disinformation.

President Biden’s pick to lead this body is Nina Jankowicz, who has repeatedly cast doubt on the reporting about Hunter Biden’s laptop by the New York Post, which has now been proven to be true.

During a series of live tweets during the presidential debate between Biden and Donald Trump in October 2020, Jankowicz referenced the laptop.

“Back on the ‘laptop from hell,’ apparently—Biden notes 50 former natsec officials and 5 former CIA heads that believe the laptop is a Russian influence op,” Jankowicz tweeted.

“Trump says ‘Russia, Russia, Russia,’” she added.

Her tweet resurfaced immediately after she revealed she’d been named executive director of the new disinformation bureau on Wednesday — as conservatives slammed her as a “leftist radical” and expressed doubt in her ability to spot misinformation.

Many conservative pundits have raised concerns over a possible infringement of the 1st Amendment and freedom of speech, while the definition of ‘disinformation’ and ‘misinformation’ appear to be very vague.
