Earthquake in Turkey: Race to locate the two missing Greeks

The Greek couple is believed to be trapped several meters under the debris of the apartment building they lived in in Antioch

Newsroom February 10 01:50

Two Greeks are missing from last Monday’s deadly earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

The Greek couple lived in a 6-storey apartment building in the center of Antioch and have given no signs of life since the day of the devastating earthquake.

George Andypas, 65, and his wife, Nida Andypas, 62, lived on the 5th floor of the apartment building that collapsed after the deadly earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria.

Their children and their relatives have appealed to all the relevant agencies in order to start the procedures to locate them.

George Antipas is Greek and his wife are members of the Greek minority of Syria.

Yesterday the Greek EMAK team went to the site and did a surface search without finding anything.

According to information, the point is “closed” from a rescue point of view, which means that it seems that those who were to be found alive have been located.

However, today the Greek team submitted to the Turkish coordinators a request for an exception in order to investigate the site.

According to information the two Greeks are estimated to be trapped several meters below the top of the debris, according to ERT’s envoy to Turkey, Giorgos Sideris, who is next to the Greek rescue team.

“For us, the fact that they are Greeks signifies something very important and we must, for symbolic reasons, conduct a search and rescue operation”, said the representative of the Fire Brigade, Yiannis Artopios, speaking to ERT.
