State Department: We expect the Albanian authorities to respect the law in the case of Fredi Beleris

The elected mayor of Himara in Northern Epirus is still in jail with trumped up charges

Newsroom September 14 02:05

The US State Department sent the message to the Albanian authorities that the US government expects the law to be respected in the case of (Himara mayor) Fredi Beleris.

In response to a question from Greek correspondents in Washington, a State Department spokesperson said “we are aware of the case (of the detention of Fredi Beleris) and we expect the Albanian authorities to follow due process according to the laws (of the country)”.

The case has caused a strain in Greek-Albanian relations and put Tirana under pressure from the European Union.
