The illegally appointed mayor of Himara, Gjergji Goros, has been arrested

It came after a complaint by the elected mayor of Himara Fredi Beleris - Albania hopes the presence of another member of the minority will appease Greece

Newsroom March 24 04:30

The illegally appointed by the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama mayor of Himara, Gjergji Goros, was arrested by order of the Special Prosecutor’s Office.

The arrest of Gjergji Goros comes after many complaints of abuse of power and illegal alienation of property. While the Court of Albania had pointed out that it is illegal for him to remain in the position of Mayor, he had refused to resign until now. At the same time, Athens was also reacting to Goros remaining in the position of mayor even though he had lost the elections.

This development with the arrest of Goros makes Rama’s plans easier.

Perhaps the moment of the arrest is not coincidental, as a few days ago Rama appointed the minority former member of parliament of the Socialist Party Tavos as the regional governor of Avlona who thus also has the supervision and management of the town of Himara.

Most likely, the Albanian side hopes that the presence of another member of the indigenous ethnic Greek minority who of course has nothing to do with Himara and the Greek minority organization “OMONIA”, will appease the Greek reactions.

As the website himara.gr reports, his arrest was made following a complaint by the elected mayor of Himara, Fredis Beleris. Goros and another person identified as Mihallaq Bonjaku were arrested, while three others were placed under house arrest. It is reported that the arrests are related to the strategic investment status of Artan Gaçi, husband of the former Minister of Foreign Affairs and former Minister of Defense of Albania, Olta Xhaçka.

On the other hand, Mihallaq Bonjaku claimed that his property, or rather a part of the property, had been stolen and Artan Gaçi had been declared a strategic investor and had started the construction of a luxury resort there. As he states, his property was fenced off and he was not allowed to enter.

Gjergji Goros was arrested in a bar in Drymades, while a prosecutor was also present at the time of his arrest.

It should be noted that he remained in his position as mayor of Himara despite losing the local elections on May 14 to Fredi Beleris, who was arrested and sentenced to 2.6 years in prison for the trumped-up charges of vote-buying.
