A rescue operation was carried out this morning when, according to a report from the APB, a boat carrying 52 migrants was spotted off the coast of Gavdos at 5:30 a.m., when authorities were informed.
A cargo ship, flying the flag of Panama, was at the spot, specifically 63 nautical miles south of Gavdos, with its sailors approaching the ship and transferring the migrants, including children, to the cargo ship.
They are currently being transferred to the port of Paleochora, west of Chania, where they will follow the prescribed procedures regarding the provision of what is necessary for their food and safety, as well as a few days of hospitality until their transfer to Athens.
