SYRIZA leader Stefanos Kasselakis will join this afternoon’s parliamentary group meeting via video conference. He is currently in Chania preparing for his wedding to Tyler Macbeth. His participation comes amid internal challenges, particularly from Pavlos Polakis, and following Popi Tsapanidou’s acceptance of a parliamentary seat.
The Tsapanidou Background
Former SYRIZA spokesperson Popi Tsapanidou met today with the party’s Director, Manolis Kapnisakis, to clarify her intentions regarding the parliamentary seat vacated by Othon Iliopoulos. Tsapanidou had already accepted the seat after being contacted by the Parliament’s Presidium, in line with constitutional and parliamentary regulations. She is expected to be sworn in as an MP on Friday.
Internal Dynamics in SYRIZA
Kasselakis is seeking to regain control of the party’s direction after Polakis openly challenged his leadership. The parliamentary group meeting, convened urgently, aims to address the tensions within the party, especially following Polakis’s recent dissent. Despite efforts to maintain party unity, the atmosphere remains tense, with previous meetings marred by conflict, including Polakis’s expulsion.
New Movements and Responses
Meanwhile, a new internal faction called the “Members’ Movement” is emerging, supporting the leadership and gathering signatures on the party’s website. At the same time, SYRIZA’s overseas members have called for the representation of the Greek diaspora to continue in Parliament, with some advocating for Kasselakis to assume the vacant seat, respecting the will of their base.
