Earlier today, the Israeli military announced it had discovered bodies in Gaza, potentially belonging to hostages. The family of 23-year-old Israeli-American hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin confirmed that he was found deceased in the Gaza Strip.
“With broken hearts, the Goldberg-Polin family is devastated to announce the death of their beloved son and brother, Hersh,” read the family’s statement, adding, “We thank everyone for their love and support and request privacy at this time.”
Goldberg-Polin was one of the more prominent hostages, as his parents had met with world leaders, persistently advocating for help. Last month, they spoke at the Democratic Party conference, where the crowd chanted, “Bring them home.”
Earlier today, the White House confirmed that Israeli forces recovered the bodies of six hostages from a tunnel under the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip, one of whom was Goldberg-Polin, a U.S. citizen.
