On October 6, one year has passed since the death of Mary Chronopoulou. Although a significant amount of time has passed since the beloved actress left this world, a resolution regarding her ashes has yet to be reached.
On the morning of October 9, her close friend Charis Papadopoulos spoke via Skype on the show “To Proino,” expressing his uncertainty about what to do with her ashes, which he currently keeps at his home.
Haris Papadopoulos stated: “I have her ashes; I obtained them legally from Ritsona, with the director’s signature. No, I don’t want them here. It’s not easy to hold onto someone’s life. This matter must come to an end. I have requested to meet with ‘The Smile of the Child’ to see if what was promised to Mairi back then will come to fruition.”
He further emphasized, “They told Mairi back then that a museum would be established, etc. Mary always said she wanted her ashes scattered at Sounion; that was her wish. I have requested a meeting with ‘The Smile of the Child,’ but I have received no response. I see indifference; the estate has been abandoned, and the fence has fallen.”
The late actress had expressed her desire for her ashes to be scattered at Sounion or to remain at her estate in Paiania, should her home eventually become a museum.
Her lawyer and friend, Dimitris Chatzimichalis, made statements in January 2024 on the show “Super Katerina,” addressing the issue.
“The ashes were legally retrieved by her friend Haris Papadopoulos, following a decision by relatives and friends. He keeps them in a very nice space in his office, which is also his home, and from there, we await to see what Mr. Giannopoulos and ‘The Smile of the Child’ will do, as he promised Mairi that he would establish a foundation in her name,” he stated.
Finally, he mentioned the actress’s wish: “Mairi had stated in writing that she wanted her ashes to be scattered at Sounion. After Mr. Giannopoulos promised that the house would be open to children, we are waiting to see what Mr. Giannopoulos will do. We are open to any agreement.”
