A new barrage of statements were made by the Republican candidate for the US presidency, Donald Trump, who speaking from Raleigh in North Carolina on the eve of the U.S. election announced a new policy he would implement if elected president: He will impose tariffs on Mexico if the US’s southern neighbor doesn’t stop illegal immigrants from crossing their shared border.
Referring to Mexico’s newly sworn-in president, Claudia Seinbaum, Trump said: “I have not met her and I will let her know on day one or sooner that if they don’t stop this charge of criminals and drugs coming into our country, I will immediately impose a 25% tariff on everything they send into the United States of America,” the Guardian reports.
“It only has a 100% chance of succeeding because if she doesn’t, I’ll do 50% and if she doesn’t, I’ll do 75%. For the tough ones, I’ll do it 100%,” Trump said, predicting that Mexico will deploy troops to its southern border with Guatemala and Belize to stop migrants heading north.
“You know, their southern border is where they come from, they go straight through there. And, by the way, there’s a 100 percent chance it will work,” he said.
