The search continues for the 21-year-old German man whose traces disappeared on Thursday night (13/2) in the gorge of Samaria.
EMAK and police forces are scanning the area, while drones are also assisting in the search. On Monday, the searches were moved further west, after the sister of the missing man posted that his last sighting was from Gigilo, one of the highest and most dangerous peaks in the White Mountains, especially for those unfamiliar with the area.
The teams that were foraging in the area of Gigilos were forced to return to Xyloskalo, due to the dense fog that made their stay dangerous, according to neakriti.gr. The trail and the surrounding areas of the Samaria National Park have already been searched.
It will be recalled that 21-year-old Johann Williams, who was staying at a hotel in Chania, set out last Thursday in a rented vehicle to Xyloskalo Omalos for a hike. His disappearance was reported Saturday by the owner of the rental company, mobilizing authorities.
The 21-year-old’s sister, through a post on social media, appealed for help, posting the text message her brother had sent her on Thursday afternoon, hours before he went missing. According to her, their last communication was at 19:40, where he told her that everything was fine, estimating that he may have been at the top of Gigilou at that time. She expressed concern that something may have happened on his return. She stressed that every moment is critical as her brother has been missing for the fifth day, and asked for the support of those who can help.
Areas above 1,000 metres in the White Mountains are covered in snow, with temperatures below freezing. Conditions are harsh, even during the day, making it difficult for rescuers’ efforts. At the same time, investigations are also being carried out on the coastal front from Agia Roumeli to Paleochora by the Coast Guard.
