A call for the international community to adopt a plan to rebuild Gaza without displacing Palestinians, as Donald Trump has called for, angering the Arab world, has been issued by the president of Egypt.
“We stressed the importance of the international community adopting a plan to rebuild the Gaza Strip without displacing Palestinians – I repeat, without displacing Palestinians from their lands,” Abdell Fattah al-Sisi at a press conference with the Spanish prime minister in Madrid.
Trump has proposed a plan to redevelop the enclave into an international beach resort after the relocation of its Palestinian residents. In this context, he called on Jordan and Egypt to accept the Palestinians into their territories.
Egypt and Jordan, along with other Arab states, rejected the plan and said they would work on an alternative to Trump’s proposal, but there are no signs that they are making serious progress in that direction.
Sisi added that the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), which provides humanitarian aid and health and education services to millions of people in the Palestinian territories and neighboring Arab countries of Syria, Lebanon and Jordan, is essential for Palestinians.
UNRWA said its services in the Gaza Strip and West Bank would be hit following an Israeli law that banned the agency from operating in Israeli territories – including East Jerusalem, which Israel annexed in a move that is not internationally recognized – and from having contacts with Israeli authorities since January 30.
