No train services on February 28 due to nationwide strike, Hellenic Train announces

On Friday, February 28, 2025, the entire country will be in the grip of a general strike to mark the second anniversary of the tragic rail disaster in Tempi, which claimed numerous lives. Hellenic Train has confirmed that no train services will operate across Greece due to the 24-hour strike called by the railway workers

Newsroom February 21 07:32

This strike comes as part of a broader nationwide labor protest organized by GSEE and ADEDY, which are demanding justice for the victims of the Tempi tragedy. The unions are also calling for the following:

  • The implementation of the rule of law.
  • No cover-ups or compromises regarding the tragedy.
  • Punishment for those responsible, regardless of their status.
  • Strengthening of transportation safety, including land, air, and sea, to protect the public and prevent further tragedies.

Shipping Disruptions:

In addition to train disruptions, ferries will also be grounded in Greek ports on February 28, as the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO) joins the strike. The federation has declared a 24-hour strike, starting at 00:01 and ending at 24:00 on the same day, across all categories of vessels.

PNO’s protest also highlights concerns over the safety of maritime transport, in addition to addressing the tragedy in Tempi.

Taxi Drivers’ Protest:

The Panhellenic Federation of Taxi Owners (POEIATA) has announced a three-hour strike, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, also on February 28. The strike is a form of remembrance for the victims of the Tempi disaster, and the federation is calling for immediate justice for the lives lost in the crash.

Air Traffic Controllers Join Strike:

Air traffic controllers will also be participating in the 24-hour strike called by ADEDY on February 28. During the strike, only certain essential flights will be allowed to operate, including those carrying state leaders, military operations, emergency flights, humanitarian aid, and search and rescue missions.

Public Transport Services:

As of now, there have been no announcements regarding disruptions to public transport services (buses, trolleys, metro, suburban railway) from the relevant unions. However, it is possible that limited services will be available to facilitate participation in the protests in central Athens.

EKAB Workers’ Participation:

The Panhellenic Federation of EKAB Personnel has also declared its participation in the strike. The organization is calling on all members to join the protests across Greece, demanding justice for the victims of the Tempi disaster and criticizing the privatization and degradation of public services.

Closure of Theaters and Nightclubs:

In a show of respect for the victims of the Tempi rail disaster, many theaters and nightclubs will remain closed on the evening of February 28. This gesture serves as a tribute to those who lost their lives in the tragic accident.
