European Union High Representative Kaja Kallas stated on Thursday that she considers the most likely scenario regarding the U.S. proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine to be Russia accepting it, but under specific conditions.
Speaking to Reuters on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Summit, the Vice President of the European Commission explained that Washington recognizes Moscow may be stalling the process to create confusion, something the U.S. is keen to avoid.
Earlier, in an interview with CNN, Kallas emphasized:
“We must be very strict that any ceasefire cannot come with conditions set by Russia.”
She added that if Moscow truly wants to end the war, it should simply stop bombing Ukraine.
G7 Foreign Ministers’ Response
G7 foreign ministers continued discussions late into Thursday, aiming to finalize a joint statement on Ukraine.
Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly, who is hosting the meeting, is scheduled to hold a press conference at 08:30 local time (14:30 Athens time) to mark the final day of talks.
However, the unity of the G7 (Germany, Canada, France, Italy, the UK, Japan, and the U.S.) has come into question following Donald Trump’s return to the White House. The former president has been accused of:
- A dramatic rapprochement with Russian President Vladimir Putin
- Expansionist rhetoric, particularly toward Canada
- Engaging in a trade war with key U.S. allies
As the G7 seeks to coordinate a unified stance on Ukraine, all eyes remain on how the U.S. will navigate its relationship with Russia under the new administration.
