Strike on 9 April: What applies to Metro, buses and suburban trains – Who is participating in Wednesday’s mobilisations

Greece goes on strike on Wednesday 9 April 2025.

The General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) and the ADEDY have declared a 24-hour General Strike on April 9, involving federations, trade unions and unions of the private and public sector, dividing, among others, wage increases, Collective Labour Agreements, the restoration of the 13th and 14th wages in the public sector, and measures to tackle unemployment and the housing crisis.

Calling for mass participation in the strike, the GSEE has scheduled its main rally on Wednesday morning, April 9, at 11:00 am, at Claythmonos Square in Athens, the strike rally of ADEDY will take place at Syntagma, outside the Ministry of Finance, at 10:30 am. PAME’s strike meeting will take place at the Propylaea, at 10:30 a.m. and at the same time in Thessaloniki, at the Venizelos statue, while at the same time it calls for participation in the other strike meetings in all cities.

In particular, the GSEE calls on all workers, the unemployed, pensioners, young people and young people of the country to participate en masse in the 24-hour General Strike of April 9, as well as in the protest rallies in major cities of the country.

The Confederation demands the determination of the minimum wage not by government decisions, but by free collective bargaining. It also demands Collective Labour Agreements and energy policies to fight the price and housing crisis.

Basic demands of ADEDY are that measures be taken to fight against precision and the housing crisis, that real wage increases in the public sector be made immediately and that the government legislate the restoration of the 13th and 14th wages in the public sector.

For its part, the Athens Labour Centre decided to participate in the 24-hour General Strike of the General Strike of the General Confederation of Trade Unions of Greece on Wednesday 9 April 2025.

As announced, the main demands are as follows:

– Minimum wage and daily wage from the National General Collective Labour Agreement with free collective bargaining.

– Automatic extension of sectoral collective agreements to cover all workers in the sector universally.

– Restoration of the principle of the most favourable Collective Labour Agreement and of the post-employment period in the pre-memorandum regulation.

– Affordable housing for all and permanent and effective protection of the first home.

– Free trade union activity.

– Health and safety measures, as well as the recording and publication of data on occupational accidents and occupational diseases.

– Measures to combat sexual harassment and violence at work.

– Fair tax system and relief for employees and pensioners.”

Work stoppage on buses and trolleys

Buses and trolleys will run from 9:00 to 21:00 due to work stoppages (from the start of the shift to 9:00 and from 21:00 to the end of the shift).

According to the announcements of both the OASA Workers’ Union and the ELPAP Workers’ Union, the workers are demanding: fleet renewal, recruitment of staff, recognition of seniority for new recruits, wage increases, public, safe, modern and reliable transport services that meet the needs of workers and passengers.

Buses are expected to run normally throughout the day on the lines of OASA, which have been taken over by the KTEL.

What applies to Metro, electric and tram

Regarding the participation of the employees of the Stable Transport Services (STASY), Metro, electric and tram, the decision is expected to be made today (8/4).

Suburban Railway strike

Railway and suburban railway workers are on strike.

Workers on the railway including the Suburban will participate in the strike with a 24-hour strike.

Participation in the strike was announced by the Panhellenic Federation of Railway and Fixed-Track Vehicles calling on its member unions – to give a strong presence at the meeting of the G.S.E.E. on Wednesday 9 April 2025 at Pl. Klathmonos at 11.00′, but also in the meetings that will be held by the local Workers’ Centers and Federations.

“As railway workers and employees of METRO and TRAM we will not stop saying ‘no more’ and we will not stop demanding:

-Reinstatement of free collective bargaining with wage increases -Recruitment of permanent staff with a fixed employment relationship -Permanence of F.I.D. and D.I.Y. workers

-Completion, full restoration and reopening of the entire railway network of the country (directly of the facilities affected by the natural disasters in the region of Thessaly) -Restart of all tourist routes along the entire railway network – Immediate operation of safety systems

-Modernization of the facilities with replacement of rolling stock and mechanical equipment where necessary, in order to improve working conditions to ensure the safety of employees

– ‘Immediate recruitment in Fixed Transport (in the understaffed critical specialities) and purchase of new rolling stock.

-‘Immediate operation of the new organization “HELLENIC RAILROADS” and implementation of the Organization Chart. “We will never stop demanding accountability for the tragic accident at TEMPI that changed the railway history and the history of our country,” the Panhellenic Federation of Railway and Fixed-Track Vehicles stressed in a statement.

What applies to taxis tomorrow (9/4)

The Taxi Drivers Union, in a statement, calls on taxi drivers to gather at 11am on Wednesday morning at Claythmonos Square, stressing that participation in the strike is voluntary for everyone.

Ships in the ports

The ships of the coastal shipping industry will remain idle on Wednesday, April 9, as the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation decided to participate in the 24-hour nationwide strike of the GSEE.

According to an announcement by the seafarers’ union, the mobilization concerns all categories of ships, starting at 00.01 am and ending at midnight, with the key demands being punctuality, the housing crisis and collective bargaining.

PNO also demands the immediate implementation of the modification of the terms and conditions for the beneficiaries of the unemployment benefit by GENE (Maritime Employment Office), but also the increase of the unemployment benefit from 350 euros to the level of the unemployment benefit granted on land.

Increase in the fines imposed for violation of working hours and rest periods of seafarers.

As stated by PNO, “in the meeting held with the then Minister of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs Mr. Stylianidis and officials, the fairness of our demands was recognized and there was a commitment on the part of the government that a solution will be provided, not because they are economic and union demands, but because three of the four are inextricably linked to the safety of maritime transport and the protection of human life at sea.”
